Reflection Tuesday

How old were you when you met your husband and what attracted you to him?

I had just finished celebrating my 26th birthday when I met my husband.  He was 27.  I had just about given up the idea that there were decent guys in the world and had resigned myself to the fact that I would probably never marry.

Initially, his height and green eyes attracted my attention…you see,I’ve always had a thing for tall guys.  We both attended a Sunday School class for young adults so I knew he was grounded in his faith.  He worked for Arthur Anderson and was dedicated to his career.  He had his own house, drove a sportscar and owned a sailboat.  And, he believed one should live debt-free, so I knew he just wasn’t buying ‘toys’ as so many men do.

All the reasons I was attracted to him sound materialistic to me twenty-four years later.  I think, in the grand scheme of things, I recognized traits in my husband that showed he would be a good provider and take care of me.  And this he has done very well.  The sports car and sailboat were sold within weeks of learning I was pregnant with our first child.  Selling them was his idea and was probably symbolic of moving into a new phase of our lives.  We have lived our life debt-free so we own our home and our cars and whatever else we have.

So what about YOU?  How old were YOU when you met YOUR husband and what first attracted you to him?

  1. Before I tell, I just want to say that the look of your blog is really nice :). Me likes it.

I met my husband when I was 23 and he was 21. The first thing that I noticed about him were his eyes (bluee, like this sky 🙂 ) then his sense of humor. He just said the quirkiest things and it made me smile. He was serving on his mission at the time and I was a student. He was/is clean cut and respectful. After talking to him for various months I realized that he had a great respect for women and I wanted someone who respected me and treated me well. He was it :).

  2. I was in 5th grade (yes, you read that correctly) and so was he. Can’t remember what attracted me to him…hmmm…are you “attracted” when you are in 5th grade? I know he helped me with math (and still does to this very day..LOL!).

We were friends till we were old enough (?) to date.

We married when we were (shudder!!) 18years old. We are celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary next month.

So – just goes to show…miracles DO happen!!

  3. I “met” Dave when I was in 9th grade – he was in his first year of college and was a handsome substitute teacher for Spanish (I took French that year and was devastated that I hadn’t chosen Spanish when I saw him). I have a diary entry that says “I touched Dave Quinn’s arm today, otherwise it was a normal day”……I married him 24 years later!

  4. that’s so sweet! i met my DH at college i was 18 and he 19. we worked together. i thought he was Hot.. actually i still do. LOL also he was funny and i need a guy to make me laugh!

i wanted to say thanks for stopping by my blog. The socks i knit are not the victorian lace pattern but a patter i put together my self. sorry if my post was misleading. i am working on the 6 sox ones though as we speak! LOl i mean type.

  5. Well, I met my husband my senior year of high school (he was a junior, but he is one month older than me…I’m an Army brat and they didn’t have age cut offs then). We were both 16 (we started dating after Christmas of 76, we were both 17 by then). We had German class together first period, he sat behind me and liked to tie my butt length hair to my chair. What attracted me to him?… I think it was his curly (almost an afro really, he tried desparately to straighten it) red hair. So, here we are 30 years later (24 of them married).

  6. Well we’re not quite married (2 1/2 months to go!), but we were 23 and 27 when we met — I can’t believe I had to think about that! What’s always attracted me to him has been his humor, his kindness, and the way I feel safe when I’m with him. I should have known he was a keeper when he called me the day after our first date!

  7. I have no husband, but I wanted to compliment you on the switch to WordPress. I use it and love it. So easy, so dependable.

And may I suggest that you add an RSS widget to the sidebar. Makes it so much easier for subscribers to add you to their feed readers.

  8. I met my husband at a grocery store. I was the same age as you were when I got married. We have been married for 11 years this July. I think what attracted me to him at first was that he was a Christian albeit a new one and was willing to go to church with me. It was one of my requirements. I think our faith in God is the only way we made it through the first year of married life.

  9. I met my Husband where I worked (a family owned video store), He was an LAPD police officer (now a Detective III). He had stopped by with his new partner, who would write reports in our office. I was 18 and he was 23. 8 months later he asked me to marry him. We have been married for 25 1/2 years, we have 5 kids (2 are also police officers), and have lived in the same house for 25. Just like you Christian, debt-free and house paid off.

  10. well, I was 23 and so was he. I was 2 days from moving to San Francisco and attending a wedding of a college friend in Evansville, Indiana. He was the best man and living in Raleigh. He was dressed in tails. *sigh* I remember having the thought several times during the afternoon and evening, “too bad a guy like that wouldn’t be interested in a girl like me.” He was just so comfortable to be with… and so handsome *sigh*
Anyway, long story short, he moved to SanFrancisco and married me. I guess he was interested! haha! and we will celebrate 9 years in October.

  11. Yay for having your dream guy! Let’s just say I was young when I met my hubby (who was young too!)

  12. hmm, i think i was 37 when i met tom. he asked me out, but i was engaged to someone else at the time.
when i broke off the engagement, i asked him if he still eanted to go out with me 🙂
he reminds me a lot of my dad.

  13. Oh my GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya’ll are so cute 🙂

Oh, and yes, um, I was 24 when I met my husband. We didn’t marry until I was 27 and he was 31 though, as he was finishing his PhD at Princeton.

  14. i was 25 when i met my husband – he was 35, but i thought he was younger. i was attracted to him because he was the complete opposite of me – talkative, funny, kinda corny and he could sing! i loved his dimples and ability to make me feel so comfortable.

  15. I met RM in our senior year in college. We were both 21. He actually lived in the on-campus apartment next to me. Our apartments shared a balcony. When I first saw him, I thought (and still think) he was so attractive. As I got to know him, his sense of humor, kindness, empathy, and thoughtfulness won me over even more. We celebrated our 9th anniversary yesterday!

  16. I picked up my husband in a country western bar. We were both in the US Navy. I was 26 like you, and he was 28! We found out that we were both stationed at the same base and he frequently came to my command but I never saw him until that fateful night in the bar. It was his blue eyes that hooked me. And he was so hot! He is a good and godly man full of integrity and wisdom. Plus he makes me laugh. Our 16th anniversary is tomorrow! Yeah!

    Thanks for sharing:D

  17. I met Dave in Feb. 2006. I was selling used vehicles when his son brought him in to look for a used pickup truck. I didn’t sell him a truck that day, but we had a good time talking about Gold Wing motorcycles. I had ridden with my brother-in-law a couple of times and loved it. Dave had lost his wife to cancer a couple of months previously and I told him that if he ever wanted someone to ride with him, to give me a call. He was 50 and I was 59. Two months later he got hold of me to see if I was ready to go for a ride as the weather was supposed to be nice that weekend. We have been together ever since and got married at a Gold Wing Road Riders Association rally on May 26, 2007. So, see there is hope for us senior citizens!

  18. it was the week of my 18th bday. he is 6 1/2 yrs older, so he was waiting for me to grow up 🙂 he stood up in the middle of a meeting, and took a stand for truth. that caught my eye. so his prinicples, dedication, passionate…
turned out we were both jewish and from colorado ( we were at a missions camp). the next bday he proposed. i had a list of 109 things i was looking for in my husband. he was everything on the list 🙂 i bought my dress 3 mons beofre he actually propsed . lol

  19. My hubby and I met working as actors at the Rennaissance Faires in Northern California. We were part of the same guild. I first noticed the good looking guy in the kilt with the great sense of humor and ready smile. The shoulder rub is what did me in. It’s been 10 years and wouldn’t trade a second.
