In the rhythm of the needles there is music for the soul
I’m still knitting away steadily on the Baby Dale Yoke Sweater for my great-niece. I only have a couple weeks to finish it before her first birthday arrives. I think I will make it. I’m binding off the bottom ribbing this afternoon.
I will be using a traditional bind off, also known as a “pullover bind off.” I’m keeping to the pattern stitch and using a needle one size larger in the my right hand. I’m doing this to help me bind off loosely.
I have a ribbing bind off question for all you sweater knitters –
When you bind off a bottom ribbing do you knit all the stitches passing them over in a traditional bind off?
Or, do you keep in the knit one, purl one ribbing pattern passing the stitches over accordingly?
I generally bind off in pattern. However, for my Mr Greenjeans, I did the entire bind off in knit stitch. For the Noro type scarf, because I wanted it really stretchy, I not only was in pattern, but I went up a needle size from a 10 to a 10.5. It matches my cast on edge well.
I generally bind off in pattern too.
I bind off in pattern, but I am certainly not an expert. Looking forward to seeing the finished sweater.

I usually bind off in pattern. How about a sewn bind-off?
I bind off in pattern OR do a sewn bind-off. The sewn bind off is always perfect for my toe-up socks when I want to make sure the bind off edge is not tight.
I bind off in pattern. The little sweater is soooo pretty – can’t wait to see it finished.
I usually bind off in pattern also, but I’ve done it both ways.
Can’t wait to see the finished sweater – it looks beautiful.
Joining the masses: I bind off in pattern.
I bind off in ribbing.
Yep, in pattern.
I bind off in pattern. It maintains the look of the ribbing.
I prefer the look of an all knit bind off but if I need more stretch I’ll do a kitchner bind off.
I always bind off in the rib pattern as it maintains the stretch. The sweater is looking good. Good luck with the bind off.
I bind off in pattern no matter which bind-off technique I use. For something that needs to be stretchy, I tend to you a BO that incorporates a k2tog instead of pulling one over. It adds just a bit more yarn and thus stretch to the whole process. It has caused me to like how toe up socks fit.
Adding another “I bind off in pattern” voice.
I usually bind off in pattern, too. But I’ve been known to do a sewn bind off where I really need it to be stretchy–a turtleneck, the top of a sock cuff.
